Aisha Praught-Leer became the first Jamaican athlete to capture a global gold medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her victory April 11 in 9:21.00 at the 21st Commonwealth Games at Carrara Stadium in Gold Coast, Australia. Praught-Leer also became the first Jamaican athlete to win a gold medal in any outdoor global championship at distance of 1,500 meters or longer and the country's first female to win Commonwealth Games gold in any distance event since Inez Turner in the 800 in 1994.
